the resolve and the resiliencke of these people. technology obviously was impacted so in order to get us a letter in the quickest amount of time possible, they typed it on an old typewriter, took a picture of it and emailed us the jpeg. no scaner, nothing like that, it was a jpeg of a leg. i said, good enough, it's a letter. we took that to ann kronenberg and said here we are, what can we do. in the meantime we did some brain storms, is this something real, is there any value we can add to this scenario? what we came up with was obviously we don't have the deep pockets to send over rebuilding teams or send over thousands and thousands of tons of material, that's just not what we could do. but what we could do is assemble a small team to go on a mission to van and meet them and talk to them and find out more about what do they need and is there an intersection of what we can do for them and in the meantime it gives us an opportunity to really look and see what the situation was and what we can take away from it. so that led to the next question, which all of us in government understan

nerd. he liked the technological toys of the west. he was in touch with the syrian population. he certainly was not a lackey of the united states, and israel. in fact he was supported of hezbollah, amass, iran, and other groups and states, that had a lot of street credibility in the arab world. so they thought it would pass them over. in fact i know that president bashar had mentioned -- commissioned three studies in february and march before the uprising broke out, and all three said, no, it's not going to happen in syria. so he felt pretty confident. i know for -- i can guarantee you that he was absolutely shocked when the uprising really started to seep into syria, particularly, of course, what lit the fire was the arrest and roughing up of the 15 school age children, teenagers, in the southern city of duras in syria. that touched a nerve. that sort of thing happened in syria quite a bit over the years, but in the new circumstances of the arab spring, and the regime didn't under the new circumstances -- it just grew and grew and grew after that. and it unleashed -- i think this

are looking for right now. it's a plan to make sure this country is a global leader in research and technology and clean energy which will attract new companies and high wage jobs to america. it's a plan to put folks back to work, including our veterans. rebuilding our roads and bridges and infrastructure, and it's a plan to reduce our deficit in a balanced and responsible way. our work is made that much more urgent because at the end of the year we face a series of deadlines that will force us to make major decisions about how to pay our deficit down. decision that is will have a huge impact on the economy and the middle class both now and in the future. last year i worked with democrats and republicans to cut $1 trillion wovrt of spending that we just couldn't afford. i intend to work with both parties to do more. that includes making reforms that will bring down the cost of health care so we can strengthen programs like medicaid and medicare for the long haul. like i've said before, we can't just cut our way to prosperity. if we're serious about reducing the deficit, we have to combine spen
